Week Three – Graphics

Good afternoon!

Today’s class was engaging and creative.  We were introduced to the Multimedia Learning Theory and image editing.  Our class began with a discussion of true or false, regarding the following quote:

“People can learn more deeply from words and pictures than from words alone” (Mayer, 2009).

I believe this statement is true.  With the use of an image or demonstration, our minds are able to better “picture” the process in our minds.  This is particularly true in children.

This YouTube clip below, as well as many other videos posted by this YouTube blogger, Crash Course (https://www.youtube.com/user/crashcourse), are excellent examples of how multimedia visuals can help benefit one’s understanding on various theories and explanations.  This channel was specifically designed to help students and teachers further comprehend many educational topics.

Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (Mayer)

We learnt that there are two ways to process information: auditory and visual.  Through the active process of learning, we are taking in new information, all while comparing it to our previous understandings.  As learners, we must be open to new ideas and opinions to continue our ongoing learning journey.

Graphic Creations

Pixels vs. Vectors?  What’s the difference?

Well, to be honest, I had never heard of vectors until this class.

I knew pixels were tiny little fragments of an image that can only expand so much until the quality of the image is disrupted.  Whereas, vectors are built upon mathematical formulas, so the shape or image could grow as large, or as small, as one would like without the quality being altered.  An example of this could be the WordArt function on Microsoft PowerPoint.  Interesting, hey?!

In class and in my spare time, I played around with many of the photo editing functions PowerPoint offers.  Above, I have included a photo to showcase one of my creations – using my own personal images.

Thanks for chiming in.

Talk soon!

xoxo missrose
